5 Week Beginners Sewing for Fun

New Weekend Dates are now available – see our Weekend Class for more details

During this sewing course you will learn the sewing machine basics such as how to thread your machine, how to sew in a straight line and how to create a seam. There will be plenty of time for practice and step by step demonstrations throughout.

Next,  you will complete two simple projects. You will be guided gently into the different stages of each one which will allow you to learn at your own pace. We allow two weeks for each project.

The two chosen projects are

  • Tote Bag – During this project you will learn how to consruct a simple bag, with a lining, straps, pocket and a magnetic clasp. You will also discover how to create ‘ boxed’ corners on your bag and how to create the perfect topstitch for a professional finish.
  • Cushion –  During this workshop you will learn how to create a double hem, how to add lining panels and how to create fabulous ties to add a touch of class to your cushion.

On the 5 week course, you do not need to bring anything with you on the first session. However if you are considering the  weekend workshop  version of this course, please read the information on what to bring with you on the first day.

You do not need to bring anything with you for the first week. You will need 1m of fabric for the cushion project in week 2 and 2m ( 1m for the outer fabric and 1m for the lining) for the bag in week 4.

Ideally for the cushion, the fabric needs to be a slightly heavier weight (non stretch but good quality cotton). Our Sevenberry cotton linens are perfect for this.

For the bag, any of our fabrics are suitable as we will be adding stability by using interfacing.

If you are looking to bring your own fabric, please ensure it’s 100% cotton with no stretch and avoid polycotton fabrics.

Fabrics can be advised and purchased during the class.

I’ve had the most amazing time. I’ve learnt so much and I’m extremely proud of all the things I was able to make after only a few classes. The environment there was very enjoyable.

Clare is a brilliant teacher. She is really helpful and explains everything so well. Although I never used a sewing machine before, I was able to go home with a purse after the very first class. This boosted my confidence and I couldn’t wait to go back. Subsequently I was able to make a reversible bag, cushion and lampshade. Both the cushion and lampshade are now in my living room and I proudly tell everyone that visits that I made them. The bag has come in very handy too and I take it shopping all the time. I already have people asking me to make things for them hahaha. They think I’m a professional (little do they know lol).

I can’t wait to start the dressmaking course now. I would definitely recommend this course. I know you won’t be disappointed.

I had a brilliant time on this course. Clare was very patient and taught us all so much. It was so fun and I learnt so much that I will definately be going back for more courses!
Everyone on the course got along so well and it was great to see how far we all progressed and the confidence we gained in being able to use a sewing machine.
I would definately recommend this course for anyone who is nervous about using a sewing machine, you will learn so much and end up with some amazing looking projects that you would never have thought you could do. 🙂

This course is great, I would highly recommend it if you fancy learning to sew. I was quite nervous and thought I would be rubbish, but the class teacher Claire was absolutely fab, she made me feel at ease and made each week enjoyable. I was amazed at how quickly I picked everything up. You will learn how to thread the machine, sew different stiches, fill a bobbin, sew a button hole, and even sew a button on using a machine. I never knew you could do that, I thought they had to be sewn on by hand. It really is an amazing course. I managed to make a lovely make up bag in the first session, then went on to make a cushion cover and a beach bag by the end of the course. I am well and truly hooked and have signed up for another course, I can’t wait. The shop is also fabulous what more can I say

I had such a fantastic time on this course. Claire and Rachel took loads of time with us to make sure we understood the basics and would always make sure that we were all comfortable before moving on.

At the end of the five weeks I had some lovely cushion covers and a really professional looking bag to take home. I’ve even been confident enough to do some unsupervised sewing at home.

On top of the classes the shop itself is lovely, with tons of pretty fabric to buy. The moat difficult part is deciding what you’re going to buy for your next project! Thank you to everyone, see you at intermediate!

I thoroughly enjoyed this course – it was the highlight of my week for 5 weeks! Fab tutor who sneakily ensured we learned lots without us realising, and a lovely friendly atmosphere. I’m very proud of the things I made and showed them off to everyone I know!

This class was great fun and went at just the right pace. Everyone learnt so much! 5 weeks ago I couldn’t even thread a sewing machine but, thanks to Clare, I now have friends asking me if I can replicate some of the beautiful things I’ve made at the Craft Studio for them!

This has been an excellent course. Clare and the team are lovely and most importantly when you are a nervous beginner, very patient! I was a complete beginner and after taking part in the initial sewing taster session I decided to brave the five week course. The studio has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and a good supply of tea and biscuits! I am very proud of my cushion cover and bag – I can’t recommend this course highly enough .

This was an excellent class to get me on my sewing feet. We went through things step by step and Clare was always on hand to help if we got stuck. I really enjoyed it and could see my progress in the 5 weeks. Everyone else on the course was lovely and I always looked forward to my Thursday evenings. Already booking onto more classes! Thank you so much, the craft studio is a gem!

The classes are great and brilliant. As an absolute beginner it was great that Clare took her time to explain what had to be done. Due to the great step-by-step detailed instructions I can now show off several purses, cushions and a fantastic bag. I look forward to ‘going it alone’ for a while but I will be back in November for more brilliant ideas and tutoring!
Clare thank you for being so patient with me!

I loved every minute of this course and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to start sewing. We covered so much in the 5 weeks but it didn’t seem rushed or difficult. Clare showed us how to use a sewing machine, different fabrics and threads to use, cutting out fabric, free machining, as well as making a cushion and bag! I now have the sewing bug, I’ve bought my new sewing machine and can’t wait to carry on sewing!

I could not recommend this course more highly. I thoroughly enjoyed the course and now feel confident using a machine – even though I had never used one before! Clare is lovely, very friendly and is an excellent tutor. I love the cushion and bag that I have made and can’t wait to carry on sewing! I will definately be visiting the Craft Studio again.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class at the craft studio. I learnt how to use a sewing machine, applique and free machine embroidery, and then put these skills to the test in 2 projects, a cushion and a bag. The class was perfectly paced and the tutor friendly and approachable. Would highly recommend it.
