6 Week Dressmaking Next Steps

You will need to be able to use a sewing machine confidently and be able to understand the basics of reading a dress pattern and making a garment. This class will be the perfect follow on for anyone who has completed our Beginners Dressmaking class, or for anyone who has made, maybe a few garments and wishes to take their dressmaking skills to the next level.

During this 6 week dressmaking class you will learn how to make this beautiful, vintage inspired dress, with a fitted bodice and full, gathered skirt. The Emery dress suits every body shape and as there are some lovely, sleeve and trim options, including a collar and a bow waist trim, it can be adapted to any occasion, from a day dress to the perfect Audrey Hepburn party dress.

On this class will you will learn the following;

  • How to adjust a bodice pattern to fit perfectly and make a toile (practice garment)
  • Select fabric to create different looks
  • Sew perfect darts to shape the bodice
  • Line a bodice
  • Sew and attach a collar
  • Set in sleeves
  • Gather a skirt
  • Attach in-seam pockets
  • Insert an invisible zip
  • Choose the correct seam treatments to finish your dres

6 Weeks (18 Hours)

Fabric Requirements:

First Session

During the first session of this class we will be making a bodice toile so your dress will fit perfectly, for this you will need half a metre of medium weight calico.

We will also discuss the perfect fabrics to make your dress, depending on your chosen pattern option and the look you wish to achieve. So other than calico there is no need to bring dress fabric until the second session. If you do have fabric already though, do bring it along so we can see if it will be suitable.

Second Session
All sizes and styles require:

0.5m of lightweight fusible interfacing

Matching all-purpose polyester thread

22inch (55cm) invisible zip

4m of 1cm wide bias binding ( depending on chosen fabric and sleeve option)

For Dress view A 1, with rounded neckline, short sleeves and waist bow trim you will need the following fabric quantities according to your size:

For Fabrics 114cm (45inch) wide:

UK Size 6, 8 & 10: 3.2 metres

UK Size 12, 14 & 16: 3.4 metres

UK Size 18, 20 & 22: 4.00 metres

For Fabrics 150cm (60inch) wide:

All sizes (UK 6-22) require 3m

For Dress View 2, with collar and three quarter sleeves you will need the following fabric quantities according to your size:

For Fabrics 114cm (45inch) wide:

UK Size 6, 8 & 10: 3.4 metres

UK Size 12, 14 & 16: 3.8 metres

UK Size 18, 20 & 22: 4.7 metres

For Fabrics 150cm (60inch) wide:

All sizes (UK 6-22) require 3.2m

Suitable Fabrics:
Medium weight cotton, cotton lawn, cotton blends, lightweight linens, satin
